Going into this post idea (which was just, you know, how to organize your books), I had no idea that I would find an entire online community dedicated to that #shelfie life. What in the eff is a #shelfie, you ask? It’s a photo of a bookshelf that is so aesthetically pleasing that it’s hard to believe it is in someone’s home and not just an interior design magazine. It basically shows *the* way to organize your books and to show them off to the world. And now, to be honest with you, I feel that my own stacks of books are just not living up to these standards.
These photos might seem kind of intimidating to someone who isn’t fluent in home decor (I know they were to me), but actually, organizing your books in a very beautiful way isn’t as hard as it seems, and it’s also quite a pleasing task. Not only does it ensure that you will always be able to find the book you want to re-read for the 20th time, but it also makes people walk into your bedroom and oooo and aaahh at your collection. And I mean, obviously it allows you to take a cool #shelfie, which is definitely not the point but still fun. Whether you have piles and piles of books that are always toppling over, like me, or you just have a modest collection that needs a better home, you should check out these ways to organize books. They will definitely inspire you to do some early spring cleaning!
1. These general styling tips will teach you the basics of what you need to know:
2. And these tips on arranging the books will also be super helpful:
3. To make your shelf look really pretty, add in lots of little decor accessories and framed photos.
4. Adding a medium sized plant, fake or real, is a great way to add fresh color.
5. When trying to keep books organized and looking good, use this stacking trick.
6. Want a more uniform look? Arrange by color in a cool diagonal way.
7. If you have the room, use three different bookshelves of alternating heights for a cool look. Instead of taking up shelving space, decorate the tops of the bookshelves.
8. Arrange your books so that your favorites are facing out – or the books you want to read next.
9. Add only a few accessories, including string lights, for a boho vibe.
10. If possible, arrange your bookshelves around your desk for maximum organization.
11. If you don’t have enough books to fill a large shelf, get something like this spine shelf. It looks cool and works for smaller spaces.
12. Or you can opt for something like this “invisible” shelf.
13. Arrange your books by color so they resemble a rainbow.
14. Add lots of plants, especially ones with vines, to make your bookshelf look super cool.
15. Reserve one shelf for just accessories to break up the lines of books.
16. Add baskets and boxes to hold even more books and maximum shelf space.
17. Make your shelves look cool by arranging your books so some are facing spine in.
18. Just want all of your books to be on the shelf? Do a purposely haphazard look and decorate the top.
19. Don’t worry about blocking your books from view with a little accessory – the end result still looks great.
20. Alternate where your accessories go like so:
21. No room for a book shelf? Not an owner of tons of books? Try stacking them on a coffee table, nightstand, or anywhere there’s extra space!
