When it comes to organizing and planning, bullet journals are the way to go. Not only do they help keep your life together, but they also serve as an outlet of creativity. Bullet journals aren’t just for to-do lists, reminders, schedules, and habit tracking – they’re also for doodling. The artwork involved in bullet journaling is what makes them stand out from a regular planner or a book of lists. At first glance, the endless doodles and colors might make one think, “uh, why?” but actually, it makes sense. Art – even just coloring or drawing little flowers on a page – is a stress reliever, a relaxing tool that also looks really pretty.
You can spend hours creating endless pages full of lists, trackers, and motivational quotes, but if your bullet journal doesn’t include color, cute drawings, and silly banners… then is it even a bullet journal? I don’t think so! And yes, you can do this even if you suck at art and you don’t feel like you’re very creative. There are more than enough ideas on the Internet to give you inspiration, starting right here. It’s worth noting that it’s not just about drawing. Simply adding pretty dividers, coloring in block letters, or pasting in stickers is all you need to do to brighten up your daily to-do list and make your bullet journal look that much prettier. Need me to get more specific? Here are a few ways to make your bullet journal look really pretty:
1. Choose a theme.
If you’re going to doodle on weekly or daily pages, choose a theme and stick with it. Maybe it’s a specific city (this one is London), maybe it’s a season, or maybe it’s just flowers. You can change it throughout the book depending on the week/month.
2. Use banners!
Little banners are like these are super easy to draw (especially with this guide) and they can instantly make a page or a to-do list look cooler.
3. Try all different kinds of banners:
As you get comfortable with banner use, try all different kinds and mix it up.
4. Make your pages more than just lists.
It’s easy to do a list of books you want to read or a list of places you want to travel. There’s nothing wrong with that, but look how cool these pages look. If you can draw a little, create more visual ways to keep track of things. And hey, it doesn’t have to be art museum worthy – it’s just your bullet journal!
5. Add corners to your pages for borders
Adding a border around a page is super simple and immediately looks good. Go a step further with some fun corner drawings.
6. Play around with dividers.
Dividers are great for keeping your lists and tasks separate. Why make them just a straight line when they could be so pretty?
7. Add little doodles all over.
There are endless pages of doodle ideas on Pinterest if you search “bullet journal doodles.” These are just a few. And again, they don’t need to be perfect!
8. Make your titles more fun.
Instead of just writing “To Do List” or “Health Tracker,” use one of these lettering styles. You can also brighten up the page by simply coloring behind the words.
9. Make your frames look good.
You can drawer these larger and use them for to-do lists, any other type of list, or… basically whatever you want.
10. Add color all over the page.
Choose one or two colors, and add it in wherever you can. Flower doodles are my personal favorite.
11. Add doodles in empty spaces.
Cute little doodles throughout the page will look so nice when you’re done. Make them relevant or just random.
12. Learn some lettering tips to mix styles.
Mixing lettering styles looks really cool – like using big bold letters with flowy script.
13. Make your monthly pages stand out.
Dedicate your opening monthly page to something creative, like a drawing. It’s a nice way to start a new month and it looks so good.
14. Incorporate photos.
Want to save a favorite memory? Add in a little photo to the page.
15. Have pages that are just meant for drawing.
Your bujo doesn’t have to be all organization. Dedicate pages just to being creative.
16. Make your dates look cool.
Use these ideas as inspiration, or create your own!
17. Add stickers and paint.
This looks amazing and is easier to do if you’re gluing in photos or stickers.
18. Make your trackers colorful.
Instead of a black checkmark, color your tracks with bright shades.
19. Use bright tape to separate pages.
Bright Washi tape or regular tape is a fun way to make your bujo pages super colorful.
20. Draw cute weather icons.
Tracking the weather? Use these adorable little doodles.
