One of the worst things that can happen to your favorite clothing item is that it, one day, becomes too small on you. Maybe you gained weight and it no longer fits, or maybe you accidentally put it in the dryer for too long and it shrank. It happens to the best of us, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck. Wearing something that is a little too big is doable, but wearing something that is too small? It’s uncomfortable, it looks obvious, and it doesn’t feel great. Hard pass. Clothes that are too small usually end up being given away or getting thrown out, or just getting shoved into the back of a closet hoping for different days. Either way, you lose out.

But wait! It doesn’t have to be that way! (Does this sound like an infomercial? Don’t answer that.) There are some easy ways you can fix too-small clothing items to make them fit again, even if they are a full size too tiny and not just a little tight. By using some simple sewing tricks and adding in a little more fabric, you can hold on to the items you love that you’re slowly growing out of – and you definitely don’t need to be a crafting expert. Check out these tips and save your clothes!

1. Add lace to the side of a shirt to make it bigger.

This looks cute and gives you extra wiggle room. And of course, you don’t need to do lace – pick a solid color/fabric or a different pattern if you want.

2. Add lace to the back of a button down top.

A small panel of extra fabric can make it much easier to button a shirt that’s a little bit snug.

3. Get rid of the waistband of your jeans.

Remove the constricting waistband on a pair of jeans that won’t zip up right anymore, and add in a panel of stretchy fabric. This is great if the legs fit but the waist doesn’t.

4. Add extra fabric to the back and bottom of a shirt.

This isn’t exactly super simple, but it does have very cute results. Adding extra fabric to both and the bottom will fix a shirt that’s way too small.

5. Or add lots of lace to the back.

6. Change up the whole back of the shirt.

Adding a lot of extra fabric to the back can look cool and can really give you a lot more wiggle room with a tiny shirt.

7. Turn a sweater into a cardigan.
