I don’t want to freak you out, but it’s less than a month until Halloween. Don’t worry, because there’s still a lot of time to get your DIY on. However, if you haven’t figured out what you’re going to be, you need to sort yourself out, girl. It’s time to stop dreaming about an epic Halloween costume and start crafting it. If you’re a TV fanatic and you love a spooky Halloween look, might I humbly suggest an American Horror Story costume.
Yeah, Game of Thrones and Stranger Things costumes will be dominating the trendiest costumes this year, but no matter how creepy and bloody both of those shows are, they cannot compete with AHS. What’s more, we have six seasons of American Horror Story to draw inspiration. And if you want to be super trendy, we also have season seven, Cult, which is airing right now to draw inspo from.
With so many creepy characters and so much potential to freak your friends out, you cannot really go wrong with an American Horror Story costume. Take a look at 17 of the best DIY American Horror Story costumes.
Weeping Nun
Remember the poster for American Horror Story Asylum and how it featured that nun with creepy white-out makeup with the black tears? Now you can rock the look on Halloween. Make sure you bleach your gloves, dress and head covering so they're bright, bright white. SourceZoe Benson
If you're crafting skills at beginner level, but you still want to impress with a cool costume, channel Zoe Benson from American Horror Story Coven. You should be able to find most of the pieces in your wardrobe. If not, you can find them at a secondhand store or in your friend's or sister's closet. SourceFiona Goode
Fiona Goode was one of the chicest characters around from American Horror Story Coven. If you love Jessica Lange and you love black, this is your Halloween costume. SourceDandy Mott
Do not limit yourself to just the ladies of American Horror Story. Channel the dapper Dandy Mott from Freak Show. A button-down and sweater would work, but I love this patterned jacket. Just remember that your gelled hair needs to be as immaculate as your outfit. SourceHypodermic Sally
If you love crimped hair and smudgy eye makeup, Hypodermic Sally is your girl. Yes, you need the teased, crimped hair and the leopard print jacket. If not, you would not do the real Sally McKenna from American Horror Story Hotel proud. SourceTate Langdon
Put your own spin on Evan Peters' creepy skeleton Tate Langdon from AHS. You can switch up your hair and your black top, but don't forget the skull mouth and the dark eye makeup. SourceJames Patrick March
That neck wound, though. If you loved American Horror Story Hotel you can channel James Patrick March. I like this take with the red lipstick, but you could also go a more traditional route and try James's pencil-thin mustache. SourceBette and Dot Tattler
You don't have to be a twin to recreate this look. You can be both Bette and Dot Tattler from American Horror Story Freak Show thanks to a mannequin head. Choose the creepiest head that looks like you so you'll really haunt people's dreams. SourceTwisty The Clown
If you're scared of clowns, it's probably best if you look away now. If you want to be a creepy clown for Halloween, Twisty is your man, erm, clown(?). Out of all of the clowns in TV and movies, he's up there as one of the creepiest. And I'm including Pennywise on that list. I like how this version of Twisty's freaky face is done with makeup as opposed to a mask. SourceMoira O'Hara
I'll admit that if you dress up as anything or anyone from American Horror Story, it is practically guaranteed to give people nightmares. That being said, this Moira O'Hara costume is something that will probably haunt dreams for longer than some of the looks. That FX makeup... SourcePepper
Remember Pepper from American Horror Story Freak Show and Asylum? This actually isn't the real Pepper. I know it looks so much like her, but it's just a very, very good costume. SourceThe Countess
Let's get real: Who would pass up the opportunity to be Lady Gaga or The Countess? With this costume, you really get to be both characters at once. And you'll look absolutely fabulous, dahhhhling. Don't forget the fierce glove...or the dribble of blood on your mouth. SourceSister Jude
If you don't want to bother with the white face paint and blacked-out eyes, you can be this sister. Sister Jude is one tough cookie and her look is fairly simple to recreate. With this costume, you can flip the bird and say that you're just trying to stay in character. SourceLizard Girl
If you're into makeup and you rather spend time painting your face than sewing a costume, Lizard girl from American Horror Story Freak Show is a brilliant costume idea. Note that a mask wouldn't be the same as scaly makeup. SourceScáthach
If you've already been The Countess for Halloween and are wondering how else you can channel Lady Gaga in American Horror Story with your look, strap on a *fake* animal bone hat and you can be Scáthach, aka the spooky witch from Roanoke. SourceMisty Day
First of all, you will want to be Misty Day from American Horror Story Coven just for her awesome name. Secondly, you will want to dress up as the character so you can wear a top hat and all of the fringe. SourceElizabeth Short/Black Dahlia
You'll have to go all the way back to the first season of American Horror Story for the inspiration for this look. However, something tells me that you won't forget the story. Bonus: It's a cheap but very creepy costume to recreate. SourceWhat American Horror Story character would you want to dress up as for Halloween? Let us know in the comments!
